Baton Twirlers

Of all the sports and activities at Heritage, one stands out from the rest. The baton twirlers entertain the crowd at football games by balancing and twirling a metal rod, equal to the length of the twirler’s arm, to a coordinated routine as the band performs, adding more excitement and zest to the show.

Only two students participate in this activity at Heritage, junior Maude Leclerc and senior Angel Smith. They practice Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for two and a half hours each day and attend band camp over the summer.

“We make up routines and throw our fire-lit batons in the air during the pre-game show. It’s really exciting to see the crowd entertained,” said Leclerc, who has been twirling for seven years. She twirled competitively for four years out of the seven. In those years, Leclerc won States in 2006 and placed third in nationals. Leclerc has continued her passion in twirling by taking part in the activity at Heritage since her freshman year.

Angel Smith has dedicated eight years to twirling. When she was in fifth grade, a friend brought her baton to recess every day. Smith picked up the skill quickly and has stuck to it ever since then.

There are only two twirlers at Heritage now, but both girls wish more students would join them in their exciting activity. Smith said, “I’d love to have more twirlers and eventually start a twirling team!”
