Every weekday afternoon, at the stroke of 1:15, the 3000 dance room buzzes with talented young dancers. These ten hard-working students have the opportunity to prepare for the professional world of dance by taking part in the eighth hour Dance Company class.
In order to become a member of the Dance Company, students must first audition. Auditions consist of two parts, a written and a dance portion. As part of the audition process, students must choreograph and perform an original piece. If chosen, they join the eighth hour class, taught by Mrs. Wright, where they rehearse every day for their dance concerts throughout the year.
The students involved in Dance Company will participate in two concerts this year, including the upcoming winter concert on December 16 at 7:30 in the Main Theater, which allows not only dance company, but all dance students, to showcase their routines. Another concert will be held on May 19. Dance company was also involved in the International Day of Peace assembly, where they performed an interpretive dance to an upbeat musical version of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The class will be performing at the Fine Arts Festival and District and State Thespian competitions as well. These concerts take months of preparation, starting from the first day of school and continuing until half and hour before the dancers walk on stage.
“Dance company is a huge commitment that takes so much dedication but dance is something that’s worth it if you truly love it. For us, it’s always worth it,” said Natasha Cooper of dance company.
Being involved in dance company requires a lot of work and dedication. Rehearsals are held before and after school when necessary. The members must learn all choreography presented to them in class and are also expected to learn the notes given to them by Mrs. Wright each day.
According to Mrs. Wright, “The extreme discipline and focus you learn [in dance company] will translate into success in numerous other areas of your lives. When a student learns how to work and what it takes to get the job done not only on time but to exceed all expectations, no matter what field of study they chose to pursue they will be successful.”
