Most likely the most popular genre of music among high school students is indie music. Independent from major labels and mainstream music, the “indie” label (short for independent rock) is given to unsigned or more obscure bands. However, some bands that have signed to major labels are still considered “indie”; but indie music is more than just a label. It’s a genre of music that incorporates a multitude of amazing artists. A few popular indie artists are:
“Death Cab for Cutie” – “Death Cab for Cutie” was formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band began as a solo project by Ben Gibbard, now the band’s vocalist and guitarist. Among their large scale of work are three brilliant albums, “Narrow Stairs,” “Plans,” and “Transatlanticism.” Death Cab’s style is mostly mellow, but also has numerous upbeat tracks. Each album embodies a new mood & style even better than the album previous to it.
“TV on the Radio” – “TV on the Radio’s” labels of genre range from alternative rock and electro to free jazz and soul. Their style of music is especially difficult to classify and includes a diverse spectrum of styles blended together into one unique sound. Their album “Dear Science” was named album of the year by “Spin Magazine,” “Rolling Stone,” and “Entertainment Weekly.”
“Rilo Kiley” – “Rilo Kiley” consists of two former childhood stars, Jenny Lewis and Blake Senett. The band formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, California, but did not release their most popular album, “Under The Blacklight,” until August 2007. The fun instrumentals and upbeat vocals gave Rilo Kiley’s album top reviews from numerous critics.
