For the sixth year in Heritage history, Dr. Carlos Pulido and Dr. Doug Laurie took almost 200 members of the Pre-Med club to visit patients at the children’s oncology center at Broward General October 19, 2009.
Club members make three trips to the hospital every year. These visits include a fall trip, a holiday party, and the 5K For A Better Day event. For the past four years, Pre-Med members have organized a 5K Health and Fitness Walk at the hospital. The proceeds of this event were compiled to finance a play room for the children at the hospital. Last year, the club reached its goal and was able to pay for the patients’ playroom.
While at the hospital, students play with and talk to patients, and found out what they want most for the holidays. When the club returns in December for the holiday party, members present the children with gifts. Students also play music for the students and someone dresses as Santa to give the gifts to the patients.
According to one student who has been a member of the club ever since the trips started six years ago, the visits “get [the kids’] minds off of their treatments and put smiles on their faces.”
