From coordinating 0ne of the most anticipated weeks in the school year to showcasing student talent, the Student Government Association (SGA) is one of the most popular clubs on campus, sporting over 60 members.

Led by President Mitchell Sunderland and sponosr Mrs. Levine, SGA is responsible for all Homecoming activities and the Talent Show. “Although most people think all we do is organize the school’s homecoming dance, field events, and pep rally, we also organize and host the Talent Show,” Sunderland said. “This year we hope to also have a community service project in April.”

New sponsor Mrs. Levine took over SGA this year after Ms. Zanaska moved. “It [the transition] was not too difficult because my officers are amazing and have really helped me so much with the club,” she said. Mrs. Levine credits administration, companies, students, and Ms. Sharron Sherman for helping her adjust.

SGA starts planning the dance in March of the school year prior to when it takes place. The club takes suggestions for themes, votes on them, and then spends the rest of the year planning dress up days and field events. After that, they make forms for shirts, candy grams, raffle tickets, and other fundraisers.

As president, Sunderland oversees every aspect of the club, from running meetings to spending his independent buying supplies for the field events, hosting talent show auditions, generating the line up for field events and talent show, running backstage at talent show and delegating jobs to officers.

Club secretary Stephanie Rey does much of the necessary, tedious work.land said. “She’s made a spread sheet with over 600 people on it who have ordered shirts. She spends hours every week spreading news to club members, filing paper work, and taking care of the shirts.”

“The dance is surprisingly the easiest part. The decorators do all that,” Sunderland said. “It’s the preparation of deciding and fundraising for the dance that takes forever.”

Mrs. Levine hopes students will get involved with SGA in the coming months. “Our next project will be Talent Show and we would love for people to get involved,” she said.

The next time you are enjoying field events during Homecoming week or a high school band performance at the Talent Show, you will know the hard work by SGA members behind the scenes.
