For the first time, the Robotics Team competed in the Tampa North Tempest competition, an off-season competition, on October 24 in Tampa. The team of about twenty students, led by physics teacher Ms. McFadden and the head of maintenance Massimo Salafia, placed fifth out of twenty-six teams.
In previous years, the team has competed in the FIRST Robotics competition. A theme is released each year, usually in December, along with rules and regulations for building the robot. The following March, a competition is held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. This competition allows teams from all over the world to showcase their designs.
“It’s not just about the competition itself, it is also a chance for students to meet and build communication with other students that share similar interests,” said sophomore Fiona Wong.
Meetings of the robotics team are held twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays in the workshop in the 1000 building. During the competition season, however, the team meets every day to work on their design and build their robot. Being a part of the team takes much work and dedication, especially during competition season, but the students find the rewards outweigh the hard work.
According to sophomore Andrew Li, “It’s all worth it [the hard work], since you get to go to the competition and see a robot that you helped work on come to life, and go on to win and place in said competition, and all the time you’re with friends and the whole thing is just a ton of fun.”
