Once again American Heritage hosted the annual District 13 One Act Competition. The competition was held January 5 and 6 during school hours and consisted of various one act plays performed by twelve high schools in the district.

Out of these twelve schools, only two were selected to move on to the state competition in April. Heritage placed first in the competition for the fifth year in a row, with South Plantation High School coming in second.

An original one act play written and directed by Ms. Wright was performed by Heritage students in the competition. Entitled “Aftermath,” this unique piece intricately weaves theatre and dance into one story, telling of a country caught in a tragic war. In the midst of the fighting, one soldier, portrayed by David Escoto, betrays his fellow soldiers for love.

Heritage not only placed first in the overall competition, but also walked away with an array of awards. Sophomore Stephanie Elfont won Allstar Actor, meaning best actor in the ensemble cast. Senior David Escoto won Best Supporting Actor, while junior Carolina Perez won Best Lead Actress. “Aftermath” also received a superior in Tech, led by stage manager Samantha Sadicario.

Although the shows ranged from incredible to less than amazing, the competition is all about celebrating high school theatre, and about students from across the county who share a common passion gathering together to support each other and help each other grow.
