Besides winter break marking a major milestone in every student’s school year, the end of the first semester, the break also is a time for students and teachers to travel, relax and spend time with family and friends. Students rejoiced as they completed their final midterm and sped far away from AHS for a long, two-week break.
Students kept busy by traveling to various parts of the globe, ranging from vacationing in the tropics to visiting family in the icy Midwest. Two AHS swimmers, senior Melissa Cooper and freshman Charlie Bess, traveled far from the warm waters of South Florida to chilly Colorado and took advantage of the snowy conditions by skiing. “I’m glad I got to get away with my fellow swimmer, Charlie, before going off to college next year,” says Melissa. Other travel destinations of AHS students included the Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas, California, Nevada, Colorado, and New York.
While some students spent their break at exotic getaways and white Christmases, others stayed in South Florida and enjoyed long awaited time off vacationing in their own city. Angel Smith spent part of her break with family at Hollywood beach, staying at a local hotel for a close-to-home getaway. Other students visited family in the area and hung out with friends home from college. Alumni Ariel Kline and David Berry visited South Florida not only for family but also to spend time with former classmates still attending AHS.
Some students, mainly seniors, took advantage of their time off to work on college applications and putting the final touches on their resumes and portfolios. Senior Katrina Kiss recalls spending all of her free time doing just this. Preparing to audition at several performing art schools, Katrina and fellow senior, Adam Glickman, scanned “tons” of monologue books to pick the perfect pieces to perform. “I pretty much have a good idea of what I’m performing at all my auditions, now I just have to rehearse all of them,” added Katrina. Finishing and perfecting her final painting portfolio pieces, senior Katelyn Goldstein’s break was far from relaxing. Her hard work, however, paid off in the end when she finished all nine paintings.
Whether you were away visiting family, at home with friends, or working on college apps, everyone definitely enjoyed an extended break for the holiday season.
