When most students think of summer, they think of hanging out, going to the beach, and sleeping in. Many try not to set foot on campus until the first bell rings August 30. For football players, on the other hand, its a very different story.
Both the varsity and junior varsity football teams began their off-season practice May 3rd in the the locker room. Although their first meet was a relatively easy session devoted to getting equipment, the Patriots knew that a new season means a fresh start and lots of physical practice.
Starting June 14, the team will meet five days a week from 3:15 to 6 in the afternoon to practice learning new ways to become better individual players mentally as well as physically.
In order to get ready for next season’s state championship game in Orlando, the Patriots plan to maintain a rigorous summer practice schedule, despite the hot and humid conditions of South Florida.
The team has not been to a state championship since 1998. With many newcomers to the program, it will be a true test of dedication for the Patriots to achieve their goal of making it to states. However, many of the players feel that with practice, they will be ready to embark on a new era as a title holding team.
The Patriots will have their first chance to shine August 27, when they take on Fort Myers High School here at American Heritage.
