For the third year in a row, Heritage’s girls’ Varsity Tennis Team claimed another state title at this year’s tournament at Altamonte Springs.
The team’s five members each played two singles and one doubles match on the first day, April 26, followed by one single and two doubles at the tournament’s close the next day. Ultimately, the Patriots surpassed seven competing teams claim the state title.
“It was very stressful,” said coach Tobias Croke, “but they pulled through, and that’s what it’s all about.”
Freshman Anna Silina praised the team’s overall strength, citing senior Julie Sabacinski as the group’s star asset.
“Not only is she a great tennis player,” said Silina, “but also a great team captain who always supports and encourages us.”
Following the players’ strong results, Silina feels confident of the team’s enduring success.
“We have no weaknesses,” she said, “and it’s too bad there isn’t a national tournament because, if there were, we would win.”
Despite the tournament’s intensely competitive atmosphere, the girls still managed to have fun.
“What is nice about being on the team is that we are all friends,” said Silina.
She added that the trip’s most entertaining aspects were “all the restaurants we went to and, of course, winning.”
