For the first time in Heritage history, the Mu Alpha Theta Club will attend the national convention July 25-30. After placing fifth at the State Convention in Alpha, eighth in Theta, and 3rd in Calculus, the club’s sponsors Mr. Rovere and Mr. Santos believe students are prepared to compete at the national level.

This year, Mu Alpha Theta Club prevailed against  Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which placed third at the National Convention last year.  While such a significant win helped boost the confidence of Heritage’s math team, Mu Alpha Theta’s members admitted their expectations are much higher this year.

The school is providing  funding for the trip, which will take 12 students to the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention near Washington D.C. The convention features various activities ranging from team to individual competitions in the categories Theta (Algebra 2), Alpha (Pre-Calculus), and Mu (Calculus).

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in Chalktalk, a “speech contest” where students present specific math topics, as well as a competition which allows them to exercise their creativity in the creation of a theme-oriented poster.

In preparation for the national convention, participating students will be attending Saturday classes at Heritage from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
