With their GPA’s, service hours, interviews, and portfolios complete and sent in for judging, American Heritage’s 12 Silver knights nominees awaited the grand awards ceremony which took place at the James L. Knight Arena May 13.
With 15 different categories of Silver Knights to choose from, ranging from Athletics to World Language, a typical nominee holds a high GPA, excels in a particular area, and is an extremely active member in his or her community.
To be a Silver Knight, a student must also be a senior. “If a student asks, ‘How many hours do I need to graduate?’ he or she is definitely not a Silver Knight candidate,” said Mrs. Adrian Shienvold. Once nominated, a candidate has to create a portfolio and take part in a fifteen minute one-on-one interview with three judges.
Mateus Falci, American Heritage’s journalism nominee, began his interview with a firm handshake and made sure he answered all the questions the judges threw his way.
Falci felt he would stand out from the other nominees because of his tremendous effort and determination in his extracurricular activities. “I’ve dedicated a lot of time and effort into serving my community and community service has been a big part of my high school career,” he said.
One winner and three honorable mentions were selected for each category, while the winners received a round trip ticket from American Airlines and $2000. The true gain, however, is the honor of being recognized as a Knight and a student who has impacted their world.
“We do not worry so much about our future generation, especially after seeing all the nominees and their achievements,” added Mrs. Shienvold.
Regardless of whether or not these students returned as Silver Knights, their tremendous achievements and dedication have already made a difference in the world.
