Cameras made out of pumpkins? Impossible. Actually, no. In the spirit of Halloween, the Photography Club decided to create pinhole cameras out of pumpkins.
“I had done it years ago with some friends,” explained Ms. Deborah Brock, Photography teacher and initiator of the project.
The club began with three large pumpkins and four miniature pumpkins. After cleaning out the insides (no easy job), the 27 club members were ready to make pinhole cameras, lens-less cameras that can be made out of almost anything, provided they can be made lightproof.
The photos did not come out quite the same as regular photos. “The photos had soft edges to them from the holes in the pumpkins not being perfect,” said Ms. Brock.
The photos the club created were displayed at the Museum of Discovery and Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale from October 30 to November 9. One of the pumpkins/cameras was taken to the museum to display, but because pumpkins do rot, it is no longer there.
“It was fascinating to learn a new way to take pictures, and I can’t wait to do it again next year,” said junior Photography Club member Irsia Khan.
